Best Time of Year for Land Clearing in Upstate NY

One of the most common questions we hear is "When should I schedule land clearing?" The good news: Empire operates year-round, and each season offers different advantages.

Winter (December – February)

Advantages: Frozen ground reduces soil compaction and rutting. Dormant vegetation is lighter and easier to process. Less disruption to active landscapes. Often the best availability and scheduling flexibility.

Considerations: Snow can obscure obstacles. Extreme cold may limit some operations. Access roads may be snow-covered.

Spring (March – May)

Advantages: Early spring (before leaf-out) offers good visibility for selective clearing. Ideal timing if you want to plant or seed cleared areas. Prepares sites for summer construction.

Considerations: Mud season (March-April) can create soft ground conditions. Our low-ground-pressure equipment handles this better than conventional machinery, but some projects may need to wait for drier conditions.

Summer (June – August)

Advantages: Dry, firm ground conditions. Full visibility of what needs to be cleared. Ideal for projects that need to be completed before fall construction.

Considerations: Peak demand — schedule early. Heat can be a factor for longer projects. Active tick season in brushy areas (which is actually a great reason to clear).

Fall (September – November)

Advantages: Excellent ground conditions. Reduced insect and tick activity. Leaf drop improves visibility for selective work. Clearing in fall prepares your property for a spring start on construction.

Considerations: Scheduling can fill up as property owners rush to complete projects before winter. Book early.

Any time of year works for most projects. If you have flexibility, winter and fall often offer the best combination of ground conditions, visibility, and scheduling availability. If you have a construction deadline, work backward from your builder's start date and schedule clearing 2-4 weeks ahead.
