How to Estimate the Area That Needs Clearing
Simple methods for measuring your project area using maps, apps, and visual estimates.
When requesting a quote for land clearing, one of the first questions you will be asked is how much area needs work. You do not need a precise measurement, but a reasonable estimate helps your contractor provide an accurate quote.
Method 1: Use Your County GIS Map
Most counties in the Capital Region provide free online GIS (Geographic Information System) maps that show property boundaries and allow you to measure areas. Saratoga County, Albany County, and Schenectady County all have public GIS portals. Search for your address, identify the area that needs work, and use the built-in measurement tool.
Method 2: Use a Property App
Apps like LandGlide, OnX, and AcreValue let you view property boundaries on your phone and measure specific areas. These are helpful for walking the property and outlining exactly what needs clearing. Most offer free basic features.
Method 3: Use Google Maps
Google Maps has a measure distance tool (right-click on desktop) that lets you outline an area and calculate its size. It is not as precise as GIS, but it gives a good ballpark for quoting purposes.
Method 4: Visual Estimate
If tools are not convenient, a visual estimate works for initial quoting. Some reference points: a typical suburban backyard lot is about 1/4 acre. A football field is about 1.3 acres. A city block varies but is roughly 2-3 acres. If your clearing area is about half the size of a football field, you are looking at roughly 1/2 to 3/4 acre.
Important: Only Measure What Needs Work
Your total property size is not the same as your project area. If you own 5 acres but only need the back half-acre cleared, that is your project area. Be specific about the section that needs work, and your quote will be more accurate.
