Stump Grinding Questions for Capital Region Homeowners

Common stump grinding questions from homeowners across the seven-county service area.

Here are answers to the most common stump grinding questions we hear from homeowners across Saratoga, Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Montgomery, Warren, and Washington counties.

How much does stump grinding cost?

Most residential stumps in the Capital Region cost between $150 and $500 each to grind, depending on diameter, wood type, and access. Multiple stumps on the same property typically get better per-stump pricing. See the full cost factors guide.

How long does it take?

A single average-sized stump (12-18 inches) takes about 15-30 minutes to grind. A yard with 5-10 stumps is typically completed in half a day. Larger stumps or those with extensive root systems take longer.

What happens to the wood chips?

Grinding produces a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. These can be left in the hole and topped with soil for seeding, raked out for use as mulch, or removed entirely. Most homeowners leave the chips in place and add topsoil and grass seed.

Will the roots cause problems?

The remaining root system decomposes naturally over 5-10 years. In most cases this causes no issues. Occasionally, settling may occur over the old root channels as they decompose. This is minor and easily addressed with additional topsoil.

Can stumps be ground in tight spaces?

Smaller stump grinders can access fenced yards, narrow side yards, and areas near structures. Access constraints may affect pricing but do not usually prevent the work from being done. Let your contractor know about any tight spaces when requesting a quote.
