What to Do Before Site Prep Starts
A homeowner checklist for the days before your land clearing or site prep contractor arrives.
Your contractor is scheduled. Here is a practical checklist of things to handle before equipment arrives on your property.
Before Your Contractor Arrives
- Confirm property boundaries. Know where your property lines are. If markers are missing, consider a survey or at minimum locate existing iron pins.
- Mark what you want to keep. Flag or ribbon any trees, shrubs, or features you want preserved. Do not assume your contractor will know which trees matter to you.
- Call 811. Have underground utilities marked at least 3-5 business days before work begins. This is free and required by law before any ground-disturbing work.
- Clear personal property. Move lawn furniture, garden hoses, kids' toys, decorations, and anything else from the work area. Equipment operators need clear sight lines and room to maneuver.
- Confirm access. Make sure the route from the road to the work area is clear for equipment. Remove any vehicles, trailers, or obstacles from the path.
- Notify neighbors. A courtesy heads-up to adjacent property owners about the upcoming work goes a long way. Equipment is loud and visible.
- Secure pets. Keep dogs, cats, and other animals safely away from the work area for the duration of the project.
- Review the scope. Confirm the agreed-upon work area and scope with your contractor before equipment starts. This is the time to raise any last questions or changes.
During the Project
Stay accessible by phone in case your contractor has questions. Avoid the work area for safety. Professional operators know how to do the work, but having the property owner available for quick decisions helps the project go smoothly.
