What to Expect During a Forestry Mulching Project

Timeline, noise, cleanup, and what happens from start to finish during a forestry mulching project.

If you have never had forestry mulching done on your property, here is a practical overview of what to expect before, during, and after the project.

Before the Project

Your contractor should walk the property or review satellite imagery to understand the scope. You will discuss what to clear, what to keep, and any access considerations. Before equipment arrives, flag or ribbon trees and features you want preserved. Call 811 for underground utility marking if any ground-disturbing work is included.

Equipment Arrival

The mulching machine arrives on a trailer and is unloaded at the work area. This is a large piece of equipment, so ensure the access path from the road is clear of vehicles, low branches, and obstacles. Setup typically takes 30-60 minutes.

During Mulching

The machine is loud. Expect noise levels similar to a large chainsaw or heavy construction equipment. The operator works systematically through the designated area, grinding vegetation into mulch. Flying debris is contained by the machine's shroud, but stay well clear of the work area. Most residential projects (1/4 to 1 acre) are completed in one day.

After Mulching

When the machine finishes, the cleared area will be covered with a layer of mulch 2-4 inches deep. This is normal and beneficial. The ground beneath is intact and undisturbed. If stump grinding or grading is part of the project, those steps follow. The mulch will settle and decompose over the following months, enriching the soil.

Timeline

Most residential mulching projects take 1-3 days from equipment arrival to completion. Simple projects under 1 acre are often done in a single day. Larger or more complex projects with additional services like stump grinding and grading may extend to 3-5 days.
